Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which has been shown to bring significant financial benefit to farms when used to treat mild to moderate mastitis alongside the recommended antibiotic treatment. It has been shown to reduce cell count but more importantly, reduce the culling rate of cows in the herd meaning that cows last longer!
Boehringer Ingelheim has produced a new electronic calculator which calculates the financial return a farm will make using Metacam in all cases of mild to moderate mastitis. It takes the number of cows, the usual culling rates, the value of culls and the cost of replacements as well as the cost of the Metacam and delivers a simple return on investment calculation.
